Cristobal and the Sea get fantastical with ‘Fish Eye’
London-based group peer into the otherworldly with a taste of their new record.
It’s no surprise that Cristobal and the Sea bring a strange slant to pop. Like Yeasayer years before, they seem to hop across continents in their quest to find sharp hooks. Between them, the group stem from Spain, Portugal, France and London itself, but their music could be tracked down to a faraway desert or a mystical church from the future.
New song ‘Fisheye’ finds its home in strange in-betweens. Like applying the namesake lens, it sees the group peering into tropically-inclined pop before discovering their own sweet take. Vocals pierce the surface between sinking without trace, and there’s a simple, Beach Boys-nodding groove that wouldn’t look out of place in Panda Bear’s ‘Person Pitch’.
DIY has the first play of ‘Fisheye’, below. It’s taken from the group’s new album ‘Sugar Now’, out 2nd October on City Slang.
