Declan McKenna challenges perceptions on ‘The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home’

The new single comes ahead of his upcoming UK tour.

Everyone rejoice! There’s a new Declan McKenna single in the world, and as is to be expected it’s a bit of a scorcher.

‘The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home’ is a giant anthemic number dealing with assumptions about the younger generation. Deccers doesn’t believe they’re a self-obsessed bunch constantly trying to take the perfect selfie. Instead, he argues that young people genuinely care about politics and the world around them. He channels the frustrations that they have about the current state of the world of the world into a barn-storming, foot-stomping four minutes.

Declan joined Mistajam on BBC Radio 1 last night (where it’s already the ‘Hottest Record In The World’, natch). Talking about the themes behind the new single, he said: “It’s generally about the frustrations of being a young person in the modern world, there’s a lot of scary things going on that people are concerned about it’s about finding hope and looking towards the future.”

He continued: “The song came together when I was in Paris around the time of the attacks and the day after I kinda realised that I now felt the emotions that I was trying to put into this song, and it all became quite real for me. That kind of fear and frustration but also a longing for change”.

What’s the betting that ‘The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home’ will go down a treat on Deccers’ upcoming UK tour?
