Desire channel the 80s’ dark underbelly on ‘Sons’

The Brighton bunch hail from the same punk scene as Abattoir Blues and pals.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Desire.

Over the past few years, Brighton has proven to be a fertile stomping ground for bands leaning towards the heavier end of the spectrum; away from the ferris wheels and sticks of rock, there’s all kinds of bands making some far gnarlier noises.

One of our faves from said scene are Class of 2017 alumni Abattoir Blues, and now there’s a new outfit in town, Desire - featuring members of AB, alongside members of seaside-dwelling punk peers Gutter Knife, Imposter and more.

Though Desire hail from the area’s fervent hardcore scene, however, new track ‘Sons’ treads a strong line in 80s gothic melodies. Think The Cure or Joy Division, given a relentless, motorik shake up.

You can listen to that track, which comes as part of the band’s debut EP ‘Voices of a Higher Class’ below.
