DIY Weekly, 20th January 2014 - Feat. Broken Bells, I Break Horses & More

DIY’s free weekly edition has James Mercer and Danger Mouse on the cover.

Two very celebrated musicians front the cover of DIY Weekly. They should be delighted with everything that’s happened in their careers so far (especially the Weekly cover), but without their current project, things might’ve gone awry.

Danger Mouse and James Mercer rely on Broken Bells - and each other - to keep going creatively and to break down boundaries. Our cover feature finds out why the band (started on a whim) is now more important, even bigger, than ever.

Also in January 20th’s free edition, there’s I Break Horses, led by the expressive, self-testing Maria Linden. New album ‘Chiaroscuro’ soundtracked difficult times for the Swedish musician, but she came out fighting. And it shows.

Another record defined by misery, only for it to break out to the other side, is East India Youth’s ‘Total Strife Forever.’ William Doyle’s debut was years in the making, but he’s quickly being spoken about in hushed but excitable terms. There’s even word of a potential Mercury nod. It’s easy to see why.

In News, Real Estate open up about the dislocation and desire to grow up that helped forge new album ‘Atlas’. We also speak to Liars, who hint at a drastically different follow up to 2012’s ‘WIXIW.’

Neu catches us with new Scottish group Holy Esque and finds out why they’re on the brink of breaking big, and recommendations come in the form of Eugene Quell, Mt. Royal and Public Access TV.

In reviews, new albums from Warpaint and Mogwai get the DIY verdict.
