Drenge on their new album: “‘Chinese Democracy’ - that’s all I’m gonna say”
Loveless brothers play Reading & Leeds this weekend.
It’s one year on from Drenge’s landmark Reading & Leeds debut, which at the time they cited to be one of the first times fans actually sang the songs back at them. “Now we expect that at every show,” says drummer Rory Loveless. “When it doesn’t happen, it’s kind of like, ‘What was the point in that show?’” backs up brother Eoin, the band’s guitarist/vocalist.
The follow-up to a self-titled 2013 debut is a long time coming, mostly due to Drenge’s persistent run on the road. “Speaking from my experience, you sign a deal and you go, ‘Yeah this touring thing will go on for six months or so’. Then we’ll just do the next record and have it out within a year. And that’s not how the music industry works,” says Eoin.
About the new record, the pair of them kept details pretty scarce. “‘Chinese Democracy’. That’s all I’m gonna say,” joked Rory, before the band confirmed that they’ll be getting to work on recording the follow-up this September. “[It’s] in its fertilising stages. I guess we just haven’t had much time to kind of sit down and wrap it up.”
Drenge play the NME/Radio 1 tent at Reading Festival today, 14.35. Catch them at Leeds on Saturday 23rd, 14.25.
