Exclusive: Touché Amoré: ‘We’re Going To Try And Put Out Some 7s This Year’

Frontman Jeremy Bolm chats to DIY about what comes next for the band.

Touché Amoré have been working on new material, and have revealed there may be some 7’ vinyl releases in the pipeline.

DIY had the opportunity to sit down with frontman and vocalist Jeremy Bolm, who let us know what the band have been doing, and what they hope to get up to this year.

‘In our time at home, we wrote and recorded some new songs for some stuff that’s going to come out this next year. We’re not gonna be doing a new record in 2012. We haven’t made any official announcements yet, but we’re going to try and put out some 7’s this year; something like that.’

What’s more incredible though, is what we can expect from the pending release: ‘We wrote three new songs and each of them break two minutes. It was funny, after we finished writing, I would record them on my camera phone to write to, and every time, I was like ‘Oh, that song was two minutes five seconds… That song was almost three minutes… That song was four minutes five seconds. Holy shit.’

The band, who are renowned for their shorter offerings - their latest album clocks in at just 20 minutes 48 seconds - showcased one of the new tracks at their recent live appearance at the Camden Barfly, and gave us this insight into the song: ‘I think it’s safe to say that it’s all of our new favourite song. We’re so excited about it and it’s four minutes long. So, that’s new! We wrote a four minute long song, which is normally about three of our songs.

‘It’s a fast song, but it’s all over the place! It’s got a very intense ending. It’s a song that I’m probably closest to of anything that we’ve ever written. It’s a very important song, and I think, for our band, it’s a landmark too. Unfortunately though, it probably won’t be out until the end of the year.’

And what might this new song be called? ‘It doesn’t even have a name yet! We have a nickname for it. We call it ‘C-Beat’ because it starts with a D-Beat, but we tune our guitars to a C, so that’s our bit of a joke. ‘

Touché are also great fans of vinyl releases, with Bolm putting emphasis on it being one of the primary creative outlets for the band: ‘It sounds corny, but every time you put something new out on vinyl, it’s a cool piece of art to have. There’s so much that goes into it, with the actual physical art of the music, how it’s presented; it’s always so exciting for us to have new things. The only thing we ever wanted to do with the band was tour, and put out things on vinyl! That is still, to this day, our goal.’

The band, who recently played a storming set at the sold out London show, are currently in Europe supporting Rise Against: ‘When it comes to bands that are commercially popular, there’s few that we would feel comfortable touring with, but Rise Against are top of the list. They came from punk; they’re still punk dudes! System of a Down, Deftones, Foo Fighters and Rise Against are the ones I would happily tour with.’

‘Our friends in The Menzingers just [toured with them] and I think Title Fight are doing it in the States. I think that speaks volumes about their band. I don’t know about over here, but in the States, they’re like a Foo Fighters size band. They’re huge!’

Following their support slot, the band will return to UK shores to embark upon the second leg of their tour, and Bolm is looking forward to one show in particular.

‘I’m most excited, at the end of the run when we come back to the UK, we’re doing Glasgow, which is top of the list of the places I’ve always wanted to go to. Every tour we’ve come over, I’ve always begged to go there but it’s never worked out. ‘

Touché Amoré released their second album ‘Parting The Sea Between Brightness And Me’ back in June 2011, and have been relentlessly touring ever since.

‘I can’t even put it into words how ridiculous it’s been. It has been so, so great and I’m having experiences that I never thought I would have in my life. It’s been overwhelming. Touring is the comfort zone now. You rely on it. Things that used to aggravate you in the beginning are just now the norm: you shower when you shower, you have clean clothes when you have clean clothes. Things like that! Every day you’re seeing new friends that you’ve made over time. You get to play shows! It’s the most exciting way to end the day every single day. There’s nothing better than that. It’s better than being at home, when I’m just sitting, petting my cat, listening to records. I mean, that’s relaxing, but as much as that’s great, I’m spoiled now.’

Touché Amoré will be heading back to the UK on Friday, when they will begin their tour with Pianos Become The Teeth in Birmingham.
