Hear new tracks from Bruising, California Carpool & more on Beech Coma’s ‘Vol. 3’ compilation
London label is paving the way for forward-thinking alt-pop.
For the past twelve months, pointers towards the future of the UK and US’ thriving garage rock / alt-pop scene have been coming from the same source.
Beech Coma - a Leeds start-up, based in London - is one of a handful of labels picking out bright new names a good while before everyone else. From 9th March, it’ll have three compilation to its name. The first bigged up the likes of Tuff Love, Angus Taylor and Paeris Giles (both from The Magic Gang), while ‘Vol. 2’ honed in at Abattoir Blues, one of Brighton’s most exciting acts in yonks.
A similar ethos runs through ‘Vol. 3’ (streaming first on DIY, below). Thirteen new names cram into one space, showcasing tracks that range from heady shoegaze to pointed guitar pop. “The biggest difference for me with Vol. 3 compared to 1 & 2 was to place more emphasis on bands and acts with live shows, rather than a tape full of bedroom musicians,” says founder Harry Bainbridge. “The whole point of these compilations is to introduce people to new acts, so it seems more fitting to have the longevity of being able to catch these bands at shows,” he says, referring to his monthly showcase at London’s Old Blue Last.
“Funnily enough, Melina Duterte and Jr., both from Vol. 3, played shows together out in the US a few months ago and I only found out once I shared the tracklisting for the compilation with them - pretty neat.”
