Lazy Day headbang at their own funeral in new 'Disappear' video

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Lazy Day.

Filled with air-drumming angels running riot around the woods, some sort of funeral dance party, and Tilly Scantlebury’s own likeness resting atop a sunflower covered coffin, Lazy Day’s video for ‘Disappear’ is certainly a bit of a strange one. Surging forward with waves of rich-textured melancholy, it’s yet more evidence of Tilly’s growing ambitions, as she amps up with a full band, and hits down on the accelerator.

“When I first wrote ‘Disappear’ it came from a sad place, but four years later and Lazy Day is now a big fun gang, so the song has morphed into something way more triumphant and joyful,” she explains.

Written way back in 2012, when Lazy Day was a solitary bedroom project, ‘Disappear’ has now turned into a different beast. “Even though it has the added weight of the full band behind me, I wanted to make sure that parts of the song were quite bare in its production – to stay true to the private, intimate and quite lonely spirit of the original demo,” Tilly says. “The song starts out isolated, but builds into something bigger than just me, something way more confident.”

And as for the video, Lazy Day’s own funeral was apparently a ball. “For the video I wanted to find a traditionally sad setting that we could mess with. Everyone has an idea of what a funeral should look and feel like, but mine would be different – where things are weird and don’t go to plan,” the Lazy Day ringleader explains. “All my nearest and dearest are having a rough teary time, but then the song kicks in and things start to change – my spirit is awakened! It’s like I’m conducting everyone without them really knowing it. But even though they bop along to the music, dance in the forest and sing the song like speeches – they can never fully get rid of that sad and mournful look on their faces.”

“I never thought I’d enjoy my own funeral so much,” Tilly adds, “but it really was one of my favourite Lazy Day days ever.”

Lazy Day’s ‘Disappear’ is today’s Neu Pick. Catch the band at London’s Victoria on November 10th, where they’ll be launching the track as a 7” single. You can pre-order that single here, and then watch their brand new video below.
