Listen: Adult Jazz Stream Debut Track, ‘Springful’

Few debut tracks offer as many mindblowing oddities as Leeds band Adult Jazz’s first effort.

Their name might recall an abandoned music section in HMV, sucked into the void like a forgotten remnant of the past, but Adult Jazz aren’t going highbrow on anybody.

In debut track ‘Springful’, there’s also the kind of cutting, intelligent Afro-funk strut that might otherwise be found in Dirty Projectors’ music, another band often accused of alienating for the sake of it.

Still, ‘Springful’ is the product of two years’ worth of writing and refinement, apparently. What begins as a soulful, ’50s jazz house number invites in softly-softly guitars by way of Fun Adults, finding beauty in the most unlikely, grizzly looking corners. It weaves and turns in mysterious ways, but always ends up at a gorgeous, inclusive endpoint. Very clever indeed - not too sure of itself, either.

Adult Jazz - ‘Springful’. The single’s released as a 12’ on 13th January.

Adult Jazz support Braids at London XOYO tonight and at Leeds’ Belgrave Music Hall on 5th December. They play Bristol Louisiana w/ Arthur Beatrice on 9th December, Manchester’s Castle Hotel on 10th December.
