Madrid newcomer Lois declares ‘I’m Not Going Down’
Bedroom pop gets a new face with a moody, minimal track from Lois Brea.
Last week, we decided to take a trip into the varied - but equally messy - bedroom studios of some of our favourite new acts. Coupled with confessions about their recording habits and production knowhow, the likes of Oscar and Jimmy Whispers also gave us photos of their inner-workings. One of these names was Lois, a Madrid-based affiliate of Hinds and The Parrots, giving a new shade to the Spanish invasion.
His early recordings are stripped-back pop numbers, recorded in humble conditions but never compromising in sharp delivery. His latest, ‘I’m Not Going Down’, is intensely moody. It’s the equivalent of a mate who decides he can’t be arsed to go out because his last remaining tenner will only get him a couple of drinks.
Resolutely feeling sorry for himself, Lois paints a bleak picture, but he does so with a minimal charm and a Morrissey-nodding baritone. There’s a fragment of hope in ‘I’m Not Going Down’, one that might be found under those messy sheets in his makeshift studio.
DIY is premiering ‘I’m Not Going Down’. It’s really, really good - take a listen below.
Featuring Yard Act, Death Cab For Cutie, Graham Coxon, Maisie Peters and more.
