Olivia Rodrigo returns with new track, ‘vampire’
The global sensation is back to share the first taste of her forthcoming second album, ‘GUTS’.
Earlier this week, Olivia Rodrigo announced plans to release her second album, ‘GUTS’, on 8th September via Geffen Records. Today, the Grammy-winning young artist has shared its lead single, the raw yet rallying ‘vampire’. It sees Olivia collaborate once again with producer and co-writer Daniel Nigro (who she worked with on breakthrough debut ‘SOUR’), but this time deliver a more mature, expansive sound.
Building from the intro’s gentle keys to increasingly urgent percussion, Olivia explains that ‘vampire’ is “a song about feeling confused and hurt, and at first I thought it was meant to be a piano ballad. But when Dan and I started working on it, we juxtaposed the lyrics with these big drums and crazy tempo changes. So now it’s like a heartbreak song you can dance to”.
Directed by Petra Collins, the track’s accompanying video is a gothic-tinged narrative that imagines Olivia performing the song as part of an ill-fated theatre production; watch it below.
