Olympians return with video for brilliantly jagged new single ‘Simple Things’

The London trio’s new album ‘Lake Mannion’ is coming soon, and the first track is today’s Neu Pick.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Olympians.

London trio Olympians are set to release their new album ‘Lake Mannion’ soon (we know little more than this at this stage), and are teasing it with a video for first single ‘Simple Things’, our Neu Pick for today.

‘Simple Things’ mixes indie-pop seamlessly with smooth hints of math-rock, sliding into an anthemic chorus backed by rousing gang vocals around a jagged, stop-start verse.

Though they’re, in their own words, “tired with a capital T”, the fatigue is transmitted by buoyant guitar pop, intricate math-riffs melting gorgeously into a chunky bassline.

Speaking about the track in a traditionally understated manner, the band say: “Olympians are, to some extents, a band. We’ve been working on an album for a while which will be called Lake Mannion. It’s nearly done, we promise, and when it is, we promise it will be at least fine. We just got back from a nice pint-sized tour of Italy along with Tellison and Dags!, it too was fine.

“This new song is called Simple Things and it’s about being washed up and average. We shot it in DIY Space for London with our friend Marcantonio from the rock band Dags!, and in it you will find us half heartedly miming along to our song in front of a slide show of dad-based items such as sensibly-priced lawnmowers and attainable golf equipment.”
