Pet Grotesque experiences lucid dreams in ‘Partners’

The South East Londoner’s twisted dream pop is today’s Neu Pick.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Pet Grotesque.

Think about the idea of a grotesque pet for a second, and something resembling a slightly matted, but very amiable guinea pig wearing an eye patch might come to mind. Cuddly, warm and slightly freakish, all at the same time, it’s an appropriate enough moniker for South Londoner Pet Grotesque, and his oddball, twisted take on sugary pop.

Through a haze of fuzzy felt production, and hypnotic melodies that spin around and around in a chiming, neon-lit ferris wheel, there’s hints of Panda Bear at his most distorted to Pet Grotesque’s fragmented vocal on ‘Partners’, a close, intricate weaving of tiny elements quietly busying themselves at every turn. “I’m a spokesman for a smokescreen, whatever that means,” he whispers over radio static, strange little nuggets of half-finished wisdom getting lost in the swirling mist. In other words, song’s a doozy.

We’ve got the first spin of Pet Grotesque’s new single ‘Partners’. Listen to it below.
