Orla Gartland teams up with Matt Maltese for new Trying soundtrack cut

To mark the release of both the fifth season of Apple TV series Trying, and her accompanying official soundtrack, Orla Gartland has offered up new track, ‘So Perfect’. 

The song - which is one of eight tracks she’s written for Trying’s OST - is a collaboration with everyone’s favourite modern troubadour Matt Maltese. “Matt Maltese came to mind instantly when I first wrote the song,” Orla has said, of the song. “The collaboration felt effortless. I love the character in his voice and the tone of the lyrics in his own love songs; super dry, gorgeously yearn-y. The message of the song is like - ‘show me your grizzly side, I want all of it’.”

Her work on the soundtrack for the fifth series - which has hit the streaming platform now - sees her follow in the footsteps of Guy Garvey, Maisie Peters, Bear’s Den and BEKA, who have all previously composed soundtracks for the show. What’s more, other collaborators on the OST include Liang Lawrence and FIZZ member Martin Luke Brown. Speaking of their contributions, Orla has said: “When Liang came into the studio and it immediately felt like we were in a band together, I knew it was right. I’d never really written anything like ‘Favourite Idiot’ before, a straight up I ADORE YOU song; it felt vulnerable! I always picture 2 girls in their bedroom, singing this into hairbrush mics. 

“Martin Luke Brown has been one of my best friends for almost 10 years (!) and we’ve joined musical forces many times since then, most notably in our band FIZZ. He brought the perfect energy to ‘The Way It Was,’ a song about digging your heels in and stubbornly resisting change.”
