Sam Smith soothes the soul of Glastonbury
The singer returns to Worthy Farm with his chart-topping debut album tucked neatly into his belt.
Sam Smith seems a lovely fellow, doesn’t he? Returning to Glastonbury for the second year, this time around he’s brought along the accomplished sultry sounds of his debut record and he can barely keep the smile from his face.
Grinning out at the Glastonbury crowd and dressed in the snazziest of floral jackets, his set comes littered with ‘In The Lonely Hour’ cuts which are perfect to soothe the heads of anyone who suffered a rather heavy one last night.
From the heart-wrenching ‘Leave Your Lover’ to the funky spirit of ‘Restart’, he paces the stage with the confidence of an artist ten years his senior, and it’s no wonder he’s caused such a stir in the charts - on both sides of the Atlantic, too - of recent.
Giving Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ a soulful makeover, running through his handful of Number 1 singles and admitting that he’s not getting down and dirty at the festival this weekend (“I’ve wimped out this time, I’m staying a hotel. That’s why I’m clean, I’m sorry. Don’t boo me! I’m sorry! I’m not as strong as you all!”), there’s not much not to argue with when it comes to this Sound of 2014. Sam Smith more than lives up to his hype.
