“It’s the birth of so many more things” - Skepta talks his Mercury Prize win
Grime star’s ‘Konnichiwa’ album scooped the 2016 gong last night.
After his monumental victory at last night’s Mercury Prize ceremony, Skepta’s explained that he hopes the judges saw a win for ‘Konnichiwa’ as “the birth of so many more things.”
In an interview with the Mercury Prize, he also stated that the win “is only going to lead to more greatness”, emphasising that “it was independent, and it was very DIY” (cheers, mate).
“I just feel that it took a while for me to get around people that were with me,” he explained of his slow burn career and dedication to his family, “everybody in my team now is with me, and I’m with them. The support’s there - if I say I want to do something, they try and work out how we’re gonna do it, rather than saying ‘I don’t think it’s gonna work.’ I advise everybody out there that’s doing anything - I promise you your friends and your family with give you the best advice, better than anyone. Try and make your family part of your business team as well. What’s that saying, ‘money and blood don’t mix’? It does. And it works.”
