Summer Camp to release ‘Beyond Clueless’ soundtrack

Documentary soundtrack is getting a live airing at this year’s Latitude Festival.

Summer Camp’s enthusiasm for ‘Clueless’ has no bounds, and now it’s emerged that the London duo will be releasing their soundtrack for recent fandom documentary ‘Beyond Clueless’.

The film initially came out in 2013, directed by Charlie Lyne, with narration from Fairuza Balk. A soundtrack will be released on 4th August featuring 12 new tracks composed by Summer Camp.

“We’ve known Charlie, the film’s director for years and always wanted to collaborate with him on something,” said the band in a recent DIY interview, about how they came to be involved with the project. “He pitched the idea to us, we loved it, and that was that!”

“Charlie gave us a pretty free hand with the soundtrack,” they confirm. “The film itself is quite unusual, all repurposed footage from classic teen movies, so there was a lot of room for the music to hold scenes together and make it seem fresh. He would send over rough assemblages of loads of footage from different films, we would come up with something that he would cut to. Sometimes there would be an emotional arc.

“It was a really exciting and fulfilling process for us because it was just about supporting the visuals in the best way. We got to do loads of instrumental stuff, which we’ve never had the chance to do before, but there were a few spots where lyrics and vocal melodies felt necessary. We often used lines from the films being depicted as starting points so everything would feel of a piece.”

A title-track, ‘Beyond Clueless’, is streaming now.

This year’s Latitude Festival sees the soundtrack being performed live (17th-20th July).
