Sunflower Bean’s Julia Cumming shares plans for debut solo album ‘Julia’
She’s introduced the new project via an Edgar Wright-directed video for lead single ‘My Life’.

Julia Cumming - aka frontwoman of New York stalwarts Sunflower Bean - has revealed that she’ll be striking out alone to release her debut solo album, ‘Julia’, on 24th April via Partisan Records.
A creative left-turn away from her band’s more raucous output (most recent of which was their 2025 album ‘Mortal Primetime’), the record promises to see Julia fully embrace a softer side, exploring her journey to discovering her personal and artistic identity away from the bolsters of Sunflower Bean.
Of the self-described “ultimate anti-cool album”, she has shared: “It’s a joyous space for the misfits, and in particular, an album for girls like me, the ones in middle school who never fit into a neat little box. I want this record to be a place where those girls can find solace. You don’t have to be who anyone wants you to be, to be enough.”
Our first taste of what to expect comes courtesy of ‘Julia”s first single ‘My Life’, a warm embrace of a track awash with loungey piano, romantic strings, and soaring vocals. “This song came after a period of intense pressure,” she has explained, calling it “the culmination of writing through the pandemic and the years spent in the rhythm of touring, recording, and trying to find my place within it all…
“Then something shifted. It was liberation, and I knew immediately it was the beginning of something new. It’s clear ‘My Life’’ would open the album, because it’s the thesis. The seed that started everything.”
