Do the maths
The National are working on “weird, math-y, electronic-y” material
Sounds like we’re a long way off from a new album…

The National have opened up about their new album, the follow-up to 2013’s ’Trouble Will Find Me’.
Frontman Matt Berninger says they’re currently at work on experimental new material, some of which has been debuted at recent live shows, including Latitude Festival.
Speaking to NME, Berninger said: “We’re playing together in a room, which means we’re jamming more.” He added: “But it’s not a jam record at all – the songs are much more like weird, math-y, electronic-y stuff.”
It sounds like a new LP is far from completion, but in-between world tour dates they’re making good progress on new material. “A lot of songs are going in completely different directions. But that’s a really fun place to be. We’re in the middle of the wilderness, in a rainforest full of really fun noises,” said the frontman. “We could probably crank out a great National record in a weekend, but none of us are interested in following up with another record that sounds like ‘Trouble Will Find Me’. That record was a great accomplishment and I’m so proud of it.”
Last week, The National performed a new song in Los Angeles with St. Vincent aka Annie Clark. Watch footage below.
