Update
The National’s new album sounds suitably cheerful
“It’s about marriages falling apart,” apparently. Good stuff!
The National frontman Matt Berninger has divulged a little more info on that incoming new album in a new interview with Rolling Stone.
Well, we say incoming - they’re “deep in it”, but it’s not coming any time soon, apparently. As for the themes of the record, they sound like typically happy-clappy, sunny-side-up National affair, to be honest.
“It’s about marriage, and it’s about marriages falling apart,” he explained. Lovely. “I’m happily married, and but it’s hard, marriage is hard and my wife and I are writing the lyrics together about our own struggles and it’s difficult to write, but it’s saving my marriage. Not saving my marriage, my marriage is healthy, but it’s good for everything! And so it’s gonna be a strange record, and I’m crazy about it.”
Elsewhere, he also noted that he bloody loves presidential candidate Hillary Clinton - “She has many flaws. I’ve got so many flaws and I’m in love with myself. But I give myself a break. So I think she’s wonderful, especially the way she’s been handling what she’s been facing recently and with direct power, elegance.” That’s no surprise, really - Matt’s other band EL VY recently shared an anti-Trump song, and The National themselves have signed up for a pro-Hillary show in Ohio.
The National have been played a fair bunch of new songs recently - head here for our rundown.
