Tyler, The Creator reckons Jay-Z’s TIDAL launch was stupid
The amount of big names at the opening night “came off as weird,” said the Odd Future leader.
Joining the likes of Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, Marina and the Diamonds and Mumford & Sons in criticising Jay-Z’s new streaming venture TIDAL, Odd Future leader Tyler, The Creator has weighed in on the issue; though he was less critical of the actual concept. Tyler’s problem lay with the launch night - which contained an A-List of chart-topping pop stars including Madonna, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Daft Punk. The whole spectacle, he says “came off as weird”.
“I get the concept of artists taking their shit instead of having that weird middle man,” Tyler told Billboard. “But because he got all of the biggest names in the world, it came off as weird. I think that’s why people were turned off. He gotta get an underdog in there that’s not all Number Ones to say, ‘Hey guys, I’m kind of one of you, this is actually kinda cool.’ That’s all they gotta do, because the idea makes sense.”
TIDAL left us with a few more questions here at DIY, which you can read about here.
