U2’s ‘Songs of Innocence’ misses out on the UK top five album chart

iTunes giveaway release charted high, despite already being heard by 38 million people.

U2’s giveaway release, ‘Songs of Innocence’, landed outside the UK top five a month on from its surprise 9th September promotion.

The band’s 13th studio album gained its physical release after being flogged to an estimated 38 million iTunes users.

Its eventual physical release saw the album sitting behind Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, George Ezra and Jessie J. Ella Henderson charted at number one with her debut album.

This week, U2 took to Facebook to suggest that they “might have gotten carried away with ourselves,” regarding the free release.

“Oops… I’m sorry about that,” Bono stated, admitting that artists tend to have a “drop of megalomania, a touch of generosity, a dash of self-promotion, and deep fear that these songs that we poured our life into over the last few years might not be heard.”

In the singles chart, Meghan Trainor’s ‘All About That Bass’ single remained at number one, selling more copies than in the previous week.
