Following the release of ‘græ’ back in May, Moses Sumney has unveiled new song ‘Monumental’, a reimagining of the Olympic Hymn for Thom Browne’s SS21 collection.

Speaking about the song, Moses explains, “What does it mean to pose statuesque on top of a marble podium, at a time when statues across the world — long-standing symbols of white supremacy — are literally being toppled? What does it mean to appropriate the Greco-Roman statue, a long-standing placeholder of white male virility and beauty, and replace it with my Black body? A body that has historically been disregarded as far less beautiful and in more recent years, objectified? What does it mean to objectify myself?”

We spoke to Moses for our May 2020 issue, in which he told us of his new record, “I think, on a personal level, ‘græ’ captures the way I’m feeling right now, but who knows how I might evolve beyond this point? I don’t think there is any one social group that suits me, or even really welcomes me. I’m feeling incredibly and fiercely individual, but also connected to other people through that individuality. Culturally, I think a lot of people are waking up to the idea that you can be many things - if not all at once, then definitely over the course of your life. I hope that people identify with it, if only by realising their own multiplicity.”
