1990s - Cookies
4 Stars1990s are as joyous and gleeful as their namesake decade was cynical and materialistic. You’d be a fool not to love them.
Jaded Southern brats, standing with their arms folded at the back of every gig venue in London roll their eyes at the notion that, the further north you go, the better the party is. Happily, we can now point them in the direction of 1990s’ ‘Cookies’. Born of the same deliciously incestuous bunch of Glasgow friends and bands that gave us Franz Ferdinand to the world, 1990s sound like they’ve just jumped headfirst in to a pool of serotonin, and are keen on spreading the love.
And goodness, what love. From the opening good-time stomp of ‘You Made Me Like It’, the album more than lives up to its name: each track is a veritable Ben’s cookie of chocolatey fun. Former single ‘You’re Supposed To Be My Friend’ is a chirpy, pogo-fest, as perfect for the dancefloor as it is for browsing the rails at Topshop. Meanwhile ‘Cult Status’ is an acid-tongued swipe at the very fools who think such unpretentious, poppy brilliance just isn’t edgy enough to deserve praise: ‘My cult status keeps me alive’, spits Lamacq-a-like Jackie McKeown, ‘my cult status keeps me fucking your wife’. And, with that immortal couplet under his belt, he skips off laughing in to the night.
