Daffo - Where The Earth Bends
4 StarsA raw, boundaryless exploration of the human psyche.
Between its almost Midwest emo vocals and glowing indie-rock instrumentals - which can teeter more towards either camp, depending on the track - there’s an endearing charm to Daffo’s music. Catering to the most intense of inner turmoils, it exposes the deepest part of themself, and debut LP ‘Where The Earth Bends’ is a raw, boundaryless exploration of the human psyche.
A natural born multi-instrumentalist, Daffo (aka Gabi Gamberg) first picked up a violin at just six, before beginning guitar and songwriting aged nine; this album fully explores the vitality of their musicianship, with drums, guitar, violin, and on occasion a Mellotron organised in what feels like an easy stride. Unconcerned with labelling, here they expertly weave together aspects from across the indie-rock-folk spectrum with little regard for what is ‘typically’ paired. From contrasting guitar solos and wavy synthesisers (‘Dagger Song’) to rock-centric, bitingly pointed tracks (‘Go Fetch’), country-twang cuts (‘Get A Life’; ‘Quick Fix’), and intense earworms like ‘Habit’ (which is cyclical in both structure and theme), Daffo’s debut is a fearless venture that tap dances its way along with a winning self-assurance.
