Dartz! - This Is My Ship

We’re relieved. After shamelessly banging on about Dartz! for a fair while now, it’s a good job that this is ace with added (cow) bells on.

Dartz!

are a band for everyone. Those dance monkeys will love the shoulder-shaking interludes, the post-rock fiddlers those scratching bursts and speed changes, while ‘Emos’ won’t find it too cheery. Hell, there are even catchy choruses for the pop kids to get their megawatt grins around, never mind a nod to that new-fangled ‘punk rock’ thing.

The Cleveland three-piece thrust in on bleeping tracks like ‘Network! Network! Network!’ with the perplexing lines that first drew in DIY, while ‘Simple Hypothetical’ woohs in to action before two-part vocal shouts give way to blaring instrumental. It’d be just at home with bearded punk men The Mercury League as on one of the best debuts - yes this one - that we’ve heard in a fair while.

Single ‘Once, Twice, Again’ is still an earnestly fresh pop gem, while the thrusting guitar of ‘Prego Triangolos’ should have dancefloor fulls looking like complete idiots with its winding clapping. ‘Documents’ is one of those cobbled together beauties that has loads of riffs, little shouty bits, and still makes you want to dance in that spazzy way that only proper tunes can. ‘St Petersburg’ and ‘Harbour’ make for some of the most intelligent pop on the full length. It picks up the smarts of Q And Not U and coats it with This Ain’t Vegas-style passion before ‘Teaching Me Dance’ gets a little bit silly.

With the ruddy excellent Henry Carden guitar gymnastics and stretching vocals of ‘The Lives Of Authors’, ‘This Is My Ship’ comes to an impressive close. Instruments pare down for Will Anderson to show off his distinctive vocals before layering with drummer Phil Maughan’s climbing backup.

We’re relieved. After shamelessly banging on about Dartz! for a fair while now, it’s a good job that this is ace with added (cow) bells on.
