Imagine getting a hangover without the fun of being drunk first. That’s exactly what ‘Every Weekend’ feels like. As the drones of ‘The Vortex’ build up and in to your head, it’s the beginning of a headache that will never end. Yes, we’re definitely in the vortex: how do we get out?
‘Bliss Out’ may be an improvement, but that fade-out is out of place, and a poor way to end a song that’s followed up by the dark ‘As One’. There’s only one way to enjoy this album. By embracing how ridiculously stupid it is. Possibly with booze.
Almost every track feels like it could be used to soundtrack a club scene in Misfits, or - shudder - Skins. And that’s probably what Hadouken! were going for. Much like that club night of a weekend that you’ve been dragged to by mates who think David Guetta is where music starts and ends, ‘Every Weekend’ is relentless. Even ‘The Comedown’, which you’d imagine might treat you more gently, still comes with a drop.
So, you know, if that’s your kind of thing, cool. You’ll probably love this album, play it at pre-drinks. Make a drinking game about how many types of electronic noises you can hear or something. Invite me, I’m hilarious.
