Gosh there has been unjustified hype for Hockey. Firstly, they’re a vaguely pleasant band, but most definitely not the second coming of Christ. Secondly, something must be said for the likeness between ‘Mind Chaos’ opening track ‘Too Fake’ and The Rapture’s ‘Whoo! Alright – Yeah… Uh Huh’. Sucks to be The Rapture and feeling understandably robbed.
‘3am Spanish’, however, has the air and vocals reminiscent of Golden Silvers, eventually developing into something reasonably original. Hockey must also be commended on a very subtle funk bass line, which despite lingering in the background is most definitely a lovely snippet of music.
There are moments of brilliance, many of which occur in ‘Learn To Lose’, but as the album draws slowly towards its end these become more and more seldom. Sonically very boring and lacking in enthusiasm, ‘Work’ is an onomatopoeic title. ‘Mind Chaos’ is an album consisting of a few singles and a few b-side value tracks. Hockey are a half decent pop band, nothing more: don’t listen to the hype – they aren’t that good.
