Hooded Fang - Gravez

It may be easy to enjoy at the time, but this third full-length leaves no lasting impression.

During Hooded Fang’s fruitful existence, the Canadians have placed alongside some of surf-rock’s finest, thanks to their steady trickle of releases that have earned comparisons to Black Lips and The Drums. Even despite the sad subject matter of previous album ‘Tosta Mista’, which told the story of the faltering relationship between the group’s two main members, the music still managed to gleam and jangle in all the right places. It’s no surprise, then, that ‘Gravez’ is not the depressing listen that the title first suggests. Instead, Hooded Fang are still creating their mesh of 60s-esque rock ‘n roll that goes hand-in-hand with deckchairs and sandcastles.

Standout moment, ‘Gravez’ is the perfect accompaniment for days filled with glorious sunshine. The combination of a rattling bass line, effortlessly cool vocals and surf-rock guitars provides melodies that are a pleasure to behold. It’s the easy, carefree nature of the collection of songs that fill ‘Gravez’, that make it such an instantly accessible album that evokes so much fun.

‘Gravez’ may be a worthy addition to Hooded Fang’s growing repertoire, but it’s devoid of any risks, or exploration of new musical territory that’d be required to create a treasurable piece of work. Even though it’s packed full of all the entertainment that can be found at the seaside in a thrilling half-hour, once the sun sets and the music fades out, you’re left a little confused. It may be easy to enjoy at the time, but this third full-length leaves no lasting impression. It may be time to pack away the buckets and spade, so the Canadians can delve deeper.
