Part Chimp - Thriller

It’s the stuff of nightmares, but all in the best possible schlock horror way.

Listening to Part Chimp is like waking to find yourself in the body of a cartoon character who stupidly sticks his head in a massive bell just before it CLANGS, leaving the idiotic creature’s whole body shaking like an incontinent jelly. Yes, their third album ‘Thriller’ rocks like the maddest of mad bastards, make no mistake about that. Just what you’ve come to expect and hope for from these living, breathing gigantic boulders of rock.

Opener ’Trad’ sets the (skull shattering) tone, prowling around like it owns the world with its relentless monster rock groove, monolithic drumming and fuzzed to hell guitars. ‘FFFFF’ (God alone knows what this stands for but you can bet it’s gonna be nasty) shudders into life like a zombified corpse, staggering around crazily and hellbent on bloody world destruction. ‘Sweet T’ is a lurching, lumbering thing of terrifying beauty, swirling around like the Devil at the controls of the fairground waltzers - and it’s sure not going to be pretty when he decides to spin you around. Heavier than concrete, ‘Tomorrow Midnite’ bursts at the seams with bruising, ugly menace, while ‘Today 2’ and ‘Today 3’ segue together seamlessly to form a sprawling muddy eight minute mess, the sound of the creature from the black lagoon shaking itself free with a mighty roar from the depths. It’s the stuff of nightmares, but all in the best possible schlock horror way. And as for 9 minute plus closer ‘Starpiss’, you’d better brace yourself - think ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ as covered by Frankenstein’s Monster and Sonic Youth at the party celebrating the end of the world.

You could try and run for the hills, but it’s pretty pointless trying to duck out of the way once Part Chimp are on the rampage. It’s better to just go along cos you’re sure as hell gonna get mangled and crushed anyway. Music this physical, visceral and brutal is always an awesome thing. Part Chimp won’t be seeking your approval, though; they take no prisoners and will probably slay you in to the bargain - but what a way to go.
