It should go without saying that Art Brut are a fantastic singles band, but that’s simply because they’re so darned good at writing brilliant songs that every single one they release is great. For those unacquainted with the Brut what we’ve got is some fuzzed up artrock played at full throttle with vocals that are nearer to being spoken than they are being sung. It’s quiet safe to say that this vocal style has put some people off over the years whilst others find it incredibly endearing.
‘Alcoholics Unanimous’ doesn’t really differ from past offerings from Art Brut, and it’s the lyrics of Eddie Argos undoubtedly the highlight. This isn’t to detract from the skill of the musicians here, all of whom have proved themselves since the early days of the band where many seem to regard them as incapable, but simply to say that Argos is a master of his art. It’s not everyone who can make rhyme “I don’t know how long I can keep it hid / I’m having trouble forming… sentences” before shouting “Bring me tea!”. A great taster from the forthcoming album.
Everybody together now: Art Brut! Top of the Pops!
