Babeshadow - Days Of Old

Is it a masterpiece of compilation or of fakery?

Very rarely can you play pin the musical influences tail on the up-and-coming-band donkey, stick it to the poor mule’s ears, hooves and genitals and still actually win. It’s a seemingly impossible analogy. And yet Babeshadow’s new single ‘Days Of Old’ appears to allow just that; in one song.

Clocking in at just over two and a half minutes, the tune explores and incorporates several decades’ worth of record collecting. The duo’s glam rock roots are evident, but so are the driving drums of The Clash and The Ramones, the against-the-grain vocals of Sex Pistols and Buzzcocks, and all the while encompassing the throwback vibes of hotly tipped for summer Two Wounded Birds. And you can be absolutely certain that at some stage, in some town, a suited and booted landscape of The Jam or The Lambrettas has brightened some bedsit wall. And this is the most marked.

All of which leaves you slightly reeling; understandably. Is it a masterpiece of compilation or of fakery? Realistically it’s a combination of the two, but ultimately that’s not gonna stop you dressing up, getting down and dropping some classic dancehall moves as though the current generic state of indie never happened. After arriving astride your, or your sweetheart’s moped of course.
