Unless you have been hiding in a dark box all year (and with the wet Summer past who could blame you) the neon quirky rays of Black Kids will be nothing new to your ears. Their previous single seemed to be an embodiment of Florida sunshine and did indeed work the ironic twist leaving you yearning to dance with them. The follow up track, ‘Look at Me (When I Rock Wichoo)’ deflates the balloon of ego/hype (erhum joy) that a years worth of following these guys via the internet inflated. It’s not that it lacks potential, it’s just a bit boring; the beat becomes monotonous making you yearn for it to end, and what are those inane female vocals?
These are the band who attempted to revive the bouffant Georgian wig amongst neon flashes, in their previous video, so could they not sweep in with a little more style or originality? The sentiments of this track are fun but upsettingly the overall effect in a throw back to early 90s pop. Set amongst the other tracks of their album (‘Partietraumatic’) this one may be said to fall pretty flat. At their best they are akin to The Sounds being rained on by a bag of skittles, they bring back childhood fun and make you smile. Unfortunately this isn’t where they are at their strongest.
