Boxes - Throw Your Stones

An eclectic mix of folk, electro and minimal pop.

Boxes creates an eclectic mix of folk, electro and minimal pop. With strained vocals and fizzling synths, ‘Throw Your Stones’ starts off as a largely acoustic number, building to an epic chorus.

The track brings to mind The Postal Service and Taking Back Sunday, with vocals reminiscent of the latter band’s frontman Adam Lazzara. This shouldn’t still be a successful formula, but the London-based multi-instrumentalist makes it work.

While a clear focal point, Boxes’ emotionally enriching voice manages not to upstage the instrumental. In the same way that Justin Vernon of Bon Iver made people fall for him with his stunning falsetto, the emotionally raw and softly growling vocals here conjure up the same effect, introducing a more solemn tone.

Combining several successful sounds, ‘Throw Your Stones’ stands out in a sea of new music that often relies too heavily on the instruments.
