Deadmau5 - Professional Griefers (Feat. Gerard Way)
3-5 Stars‘Professional Griefers’ feels merely the tip of the iceberg of something exceptional.
With past affairs being criticised for relying too heavily on instrumentation alone, Deadmau5 has focussed in on not making the same mistake twice. The lead single from upcoming offering ‘Album Title Goes Here’ is clear with its intention to tread new ground through the vocal offerings of My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way and, in turn, ‘Professional Griefers’ feels merely the tip of the iceberg of something exceptional.
With tightly orchestrated synth provoking the urge to move early on, Gerard’s vocals lend a darkness to the track, a certain punch that the mere pounding alone couldn’t create. The song then opens up, teaming bouncing beats and distortion with a cascade of flitting notes that prove undeniably catchy. Whatever the musical undertone - be it pounding or soaring - Gerard’s vocals reflect it perfectly.
Playing just shy of six minutes, Deadmau5 understood the need to keep it fresh and interesting, shake things up throughout the number and utilise the talents of Way’s vocal command. Through the collaboration, electronic music meets rock with a new flavour and it’s exciting, it fits and at no point does one element overshadow the other. Deadmau5 is righting the conceived wrongs of his past work and ‘Professional Griefers’ hints at a release that’s set to take his work to another level.
