If you own Richard Hawley’s 2007 album ‘Lady’s Bridge’, you may wonder why on earth you’d want to spend your hard earned cash on an EP where three out of four of the songs, you already have. This is a thought we share with you. The EP features four songs, of which ‘Lady’s Bridge’, ‘The Sea Calls’, and ‘Roll River Roll’ already feature on the LP. The fourth track, ‘Rockabilly Radio’, is a song from the film Flick (heard of it? Us neither).
But wait! Don’t be as quick to judge as we were! Just one listen to the live versions of ‘The Sea Calls’ and ‘Roll River Roll’ are gentle reminders of just how wonderful our very own ‘Elvis of the North’ really is. ‘Rockabilly Radio’ is a true 1950s dance hall number suited to Hawley’s hair and attire. ‘Roll River Roll’ sends shivers down your spine, with its soft piano and Hawley’s rich and romantic tones.
If ‘Lady’s Bridge’ has found itself buried under piles of CDs since its initial release, this is the perfect excuse to remind yourself of Hawley’s understated beauty and brilliance. Even if the release is a little baffling, it is a small but perfect formed addition for any fan.
