Turboweekend - Bound
3-5 StarsAn excellent assortment of indie.
How about a free EP to start off your year? Yes, there is another band ‘doing a Radiohead’, but as long as we are on the receiving end of the free stuff, you won’t hear me complain. Turboweekend, an electro-indie producing three-piece from the lovely country of Denmark (they brought us Lego ergo, they rule) are trying to push some boundaries with the release of this EP, appropriately titled ‘Bound’, while we wait for their third full length. Apart from releasing it for free, the pushing of boundaries seems to be mainly happening through bringing in some guest vocalists and recording a cover of Talking Heads’ ‘Heaven’.
Opener ‘Now’, featuring New Young Pony Club’s Ty Bulmer, demands that you get out of your chair and immediately start dancing. The vocals and overall catchiness can compete with the likes of NYPC - or would that be Bulmer’s influence? - Shy Child and fellow Danes Junior Senior. With Efterklang’s Casper Clausen’s deep voice leading onto ‘Into The Pavement’ Turboweekend show us that they are quite capable of providing some beats themselves. Clausen’s voice and the danceable music sure make for an interesting combination, creating the unmistakable highlight of the EP.
With the next three songs, Turboweekend show some versatility by slowly exchanging their initial upbeat, happy-go-lucky sound for a darker mood. It provides for an intriguing progression on an EP with only six tracks, culminating in earlier mentioned cover of ‘Heaven’. Up to this point, the EP has been nothing but a delight.
I have been told before that I tend to be a bit uptight when it comes to bands covering some of my favourite tracks, but in this case I believe I’m justified in saying that Turboweekend’s rendition does not do the song much justice. There is something inherently wrong with a track about the boredom of perfection ending up as an overly smooth pop song. Nevertheless, looking past that last track, ‘Bound’ is an excellent assortment of indie, sure to keep us hungry for that new album.
