Having formed in 2006, Violet Violet have already received airplay from BBC 6 Music, Radio 1 and were assigned the coveted title of one of Steve Lamacq’s ‘new favourite bands’. Whilst we do feel a bit like, ‘who hasn’t these days, really?’ there is also no denying that this femme rock duo (Cheri Violet and Violet Fliss, get it?) have achieved a lot in a relatively short span of time.
‘For The Young And Fresh Boned’ is certainly that. Energetic and spunky, featuring jagged guitar and grinding chords, hand clapping and a catchy chorus, this is definitely an interesting cactus in the current desert of male driven indie pop (cringe) bands. Think of a less French and less polished Plasticines and that is what you can expect from this release.
The digital release is accompanied by two bonus tracks, ‘Caucus Race’ and ‘Company Man’ (Nightingales cover). ‘Caucus Race’ is remarkably similar to ‘For The Young And Fresh Boned’, if we’re honest, and were you listening to them in close succession you could be forgiven for thinking them the same song. However, with such a distinct sound and niche genre, it would be hard to stray too much from an established pattern without losing ‘the vibe’ completely.
‘Company Man’ is a lovely break, a little less shouty and a little more toned down. Nightingales have taken Violet Violet under their wing as of late, inviting them on tours of Europe and America, and this cover is an enjoyable thank you. The pair promise two full UK tours and a trip to Europe this year and you’d be a fool to miss it. If the energy on this record is anything to go by, their live shows are sure to be a treat.
