The powers that be have obviously decided that excellent new guitar bands are less press-worthy than average electro pop at the moment. Aside from the obvious disadvantages this has for popular music in general it seems to have done Flashguns something of a disservice up until this point in their career. Their new single is called ‘Locarno’ and is really quite a pretty little indie song.
The guitars sound and glacial synthesiser recall The Cure and it’s brave enough to all but finish before starting right up again for a belting finish. There’s nothing really surprising about ‘Locarno’ but that doesn’t detract from it whatsoever.
From this we get the picture of Flashguns as being sweet and kind of lo-fi, guitar music with its heart in the right place: on its sleeve. We’d love to hear ‘Locarno’ or even its b-side ‘Ro Shambo’ all over the radio this summer, but it seems that this has little chance of happening.
