When Friendly Fires said that their new (not on the Mercury nominated album) single ‘Kiss Of Life’ was to feature a hefty samba influence, some of us dismissed this as another group trying to claim ‘world’ influences in order to gain a bit of press. Thankfully upon listening to the single this couldn’t be any further from the truth.
There’s samba drums here alright, and very little but. The storming rhythms back the tiniest bit of keyboard and bass whilst the vocals have hell of a lot of reverb on them. Despite the lacking in depth of the sounds this song sounds absolutely massive and it doesn’t take any stretch of the imagination to picture this soundtracking summer parties across the globe, from a beach on Ibiza at sunset to a BBQ on a British patio This song may not be able to bring the sun out for the British summer that we want but it’s just so great that you won’t care.
Song of the summer. Easily.
