If you have never heard of Fujiya & Miyagi before, I can bet they are not what you think. A Brighton-based outfit taking influences from Krautrock bands such as Can and Neu!, they started out as duo Steve Lewis and David Best; now Matt Hainsby and Lee Adams have joined the fold to create this new single, and recently released album ‘Ventriloquizzing’.
‘Ecstatic Dancer’, which comes as a bridge of sorts between ‘Ventriloquizzing’ and their next full-length, is very much rhythmically centered; everything from the vocals to the slightest instrumentation rigidly follows the beat, and this works in a way that emphasises the sensual and evocative sounding vocal line.
Lyrically described dance moves, along with the band’s now trademark hushed, spoken word, vocals, bring images of a member’s only gentleman’s club based in the 50s, or a classic burlesque act’s backing music to mind. The best word to describe this is ‘glam’; glam in it’s best form.
