Future Islands - Seasons (Waiting On You) (BBNG edit)
This looks like being the remix 2014’s been holding out for.
Samuel T. Herring announced himself as a veritable - if slightly unorthodox - heartthrob when Future Islands’ Letterman performance shot through laptop screens the world over. Anyone with that little concern for looking like an idiot can, inevitably, come across as kind of attractive. Mac DeMarco’s a gap-toothed goon, but he doesn’t care, and people scream his name. The same goes for Herring, pouncing and prowling with the kind of lusty growl that’s even had professional footballers eating from his hands.
Until now, this sexual presence has been a bit-part and not necessarily an overt standpoint of Future Islands. But Canadian rule breakers BADBADNOTGOOD had a hunch that yeah, maybe on reflection Herring might be 2014’s unlikely sex symbol. So with their ‘Seasons (Waiting On You)’ remix, they practically give him a ‘70s porno backing. That’s not without the customary BBNG trademark though, of making jazz structures and old-school instruments come off like a vision from the future. On this edit, the scene could be set in a smoky bar, placed high up in a 2050 metropolis skyline. Whiskey drinks lined up along the bar, in steps Herring, just as flexible and disconcerting as ever - “I’ve been waiting on you,” he purrs, and indeed this looks like being the remix 2014 has been holding out for.
