It’s always been a bit of a trend to re-name yourself as soon as you join a band. There are proper stage names, like Sting and Bono, or, much simpler, those who just exchange their surnames for the band name, ala The Fratellis.
London three piece Get People really can’t be compared to any of the aforementioned acts, however. Not only because the band members add a second forename, calling themselves Get Dom, Get Caspar and Get Martin; but their songs sound like they’re straight from the 80s. So do Sting and Bono, you might say, but whilst those two take themselves and their music way too seriously, Get People are refreshingly unserious.
Signed to Hit Club, the band’s first single is a double A-side of the Wham!-Club-Tropicana-esque ‘Careless’, and ‘Odyssey’, which you can download here. Both songs display a long forgotten tropical pop sound, including xylophones and jungle calls, whilst a synthesizer underlines the 80’s feel even more - and to top it off the vocals are breathy and relaxed.
Get People’s Tropical Pop definitely stands out from the heap of folksy indie pop that seems to have taken over the music world lately. They’re just a bit late to yield a (secret) summer hit.
