Lemonade - Big Weekend

A very interesting four minutes indeed.

As you have probably noticed by now, Brooklyn is one of the places in the States ’where it’s at’, music-wise. TV On The Radio (whose ‘Dear Science’ was well received here) and MGMT, the brains behind one of 2008’s finest albums, ‘Oracular Spectacular’, hail from there. Both groups possess a sound that dips into more genres than you can shake a stick at. While three-piece Lemonade certainly don’t seem to be as accessible as the aforementioned bands, their music is every bit as eclectic.

Callan Clendenin, Alex Pasternak and Ben Steidel have presented us with a track that is, for want of a better word, packed. After a great opening blast of percussion, ‘Big Weekend’’s hook arrives: an insistent synth line which is soon underpinned by some seriously groovy bass. The vocals are all but unintelligible, but the focus is clearly on the instruments. Everything jostles for space with everything else, but, at the same time, the track never sounds cluttered as it goes through acid house, dancehall and dubstep. Something that will stick in your head for days at a time if you let it, this is a very interesting four minutes indeed.
