Festivals Latitude 2016: Christine and the Queens
A momentous set, topping off a breakthrough few months for the French musician.
These last few months have been pivotal for Christine and The Queens. Prompting One Direction level screams back in her native France for years, Héloïse Letissier has been popping up on telly screens and festivals across the UK as of late, too. It’s seen her debut album ‘Chaleur Humaine’ soar to the top ten, a good two years after its original release. Our shores might’ve been a little slow to catch on, but now Christine and The Queens is quickly being embraced as a superstar.
It’s throughly deserved. A slick, polished show without a single weak spot, Christine and The Queens has the effortless finesse of a stadium show, with none of the arms-length distance. Endless dance routines, piercing laser lights, and a high-octane foray into French discotheque make up a rammed set that just doesn’t relent. From ‘Tilted’ to ‘iT’ and the declaration that “this tent is a free zone!” there’s no-one else out there with the transgressive, boundary-pushing punch of Christine.
The highlight of a flawless set comes when Christine invites on Perfume Genius for the first ever live duet of ‘Jonathan’. Two subversive artists that breathe with experimental fire, seeing them sing together in the flesh is electric. Christine and The Queens is going to be massive.
