Monotonix, perhaps the most well-known punk band to come from Tel Aviv, Israel. They are also one of the coolest bands out there at the moment, certainly to see live where their antics (setting equipment on fire, for example) lead to some of the most raucous gigs seen outside of the metal and hardcore scene.
However, thats not to say the music is good; it’s more an indication that it’s loud. Recorded by Steve Albini, ‘Fun Fun Fun’ can at some points evoke ‘Holy Bible’ era Manics, and sometimes more GG Allin, but mostly it sounds like the hardcore London punk scene that’s existed since the 70s. This is the sort of music you can hear by visiting certain shops in Camden. It’s not fascinating music, just a fascinating band.
Like many punk bands, Monotonix make music to be listened to live; it’s rare that true punk bands can be properly appreciated and enjoyed on record - it’s about being there, at the performance. As a result, the music, while being ok, it’s nothing that bears repeat listening. Go to a gig, don’t bother with the record.
