Of all the recent musical trends, is there any more prevalent than retro ‘80s synth-pop? The initial reaction is to sigh and resign yourself to numberless rehashes of what The Human League did better nearly thirty years ago, but My Tiger My Timing have taken the plunge, and are the latest group of trendy kids to try and spice up these particular musical pastures. Luckily for them, it seems to have worked.
‘I Am The Sound’ is a veritable feast of laid-back, synth-heavy grooves, backed up by Anna Vincent’s seemingly effortless, breathy delivery. There’s no doubt that this song has its feet firmly planted in the electropop genre, but it does enough to escape easy categorisation. The rhythm guitar and bass work is distinctly funky, removing some of the sparseness that simply having synths can create, whilst the drum beat has been fine-tuned to make you move. Vincent sums it up best as she sings “I’m not trying / To follow you” - this isn’t simply following a current musical fashion, this is taking what has got stale very quickly, and injecting some life into it.
