It might feel like years ago, but was in fact only a few months back that My Tiger My Timingʼs single ʻEndless Summerʼ became the indie soundtrack to the festival season. With one single burst of pop bliss, the South London five-piece quickly became a staple on Topshop playlists and music fansʼ iPods alike.
But the truth is, there isnʼt really that much to say about their latest single ʻWritten In Redʼ. Thereʼs nothing particularly wrong with it - in fact, itʼs a perfectly acceptable three-and-a-half-minute-long synth-pop song. The melodies are catchy, the afrobeat-tinged drums are infectious, but there just seems to be something missing. Itʼs pretty difficult to feel any emotion towards it, positive or otherwise. Itʼs the sort of track that just, yʼknow… happens.
Although itʼs totally inoffensive, ʻWritten In Redʼ doesnʼt live up to the high standards set by My Tiger My Timingʼs previous releases. Itʼs a shame but, especially after the promise shown by ʻEndless Summerʼ, itʼs hard not to be left slightly cold by My Tiger My Timingʼs latest effort.
