MYPET – Pays To Know

It’s impossible not to be seduced.

LA’s MYPET peddle in the creepiest, sleaziest synths this side of Rick James fronting Throbbing Gristle. ‘Pays To Know’ is a sexy concoction of The Kills and Sleigh Bells; frontwoman Amy Kuney slinks and slides her whiskey-tinged vocals through the black soul of Beth Gibbons and the dark heart of Ms. Mosshart while the belly-quaking synths throb and tremble nearby.

There’s a certain mystique and charm to MYPET. ‘Pays To Know’ straddles the boundaries between a nefarious strut and brooding intensity and, according to the band, the single “leave behind the confections of modern music and dissects the hierarchical relationship between a rabbit and a snake: both are in implicit understanding of their natural roles as predator and prey – yet they both require patience in order to achieve fulfilment of their positions.”

Mindless self-mythologizing? It doesn’t matter. MYPET firmly operate somewhere between the hunter and the recluse but on the evidence of this single alone, it’s impossible not to be seduced.
