It’s with a promising start that New Young Pony Club initiate their comeback single. Yet sadly, the slinky slender bassline which brings ‘Lost A Girl’ into the world doesn’t bring with it anything new into a musical climate that’s unbelievably saturated with electro-pop bands.
Nonetheless, it would be remiss if we didn’t point out the fact that NYPC do bring some tricks to the table. Of particular note is the soaring keyboard line that carries the chorus, although even this sadly is let down by the fact that it is accompanied by a forgettable vocal performance from frontlady Tahita Bulmer. There’s also split-second pauses in the track in the instant before each chorus kicks in. Whilst this is likely done to heighten the impact of the chorus the effect of each pause is that the song jolts to a stop and diverts the listeners attention away from what is actually happening after.
New Young Pony Club may have been making this electronic influenced New Wave music well before it was cool to do so, but in returning now and in failing to bring anything substantially fresh sounding it’s likely that they’ll be consigned to pop’s Z-List. Don’t get us wrong, this is rather catchy and not unpleasant to listen to but at the same time it makes us want to say “Xenomania house band”.
